Needed some 3D modelling software for a project. From my research so far the rather excellent Wings 3D looks like it will satisfy my requirements for a simple static mesh modelling tool. Good news is that it's open source too.
Alongside Wings 3D, I'm trialling various other apps:
- Bryce - terrain-focused modelling tool. Appalling UI and desperately slow. In the right hands I am sure it can do some great stuff but I don't have time to find out.
- Nendo - the inspiration for Wings.
- Poser - character-focused modelling tool. Impressive, if somewhat unintuitive.
- Truespace - powerful app but I'm going to have to spend a lot more time with the tutorials to come to grips with it.
- Maya - the industry standard.
- Rhino 3D - not tested this yet.
