Saatchi Gallery

It's hard not to experience physical reactions to some of the works in the Saatchi collection. I knew nothing of Richard Wilson's 20:50 as I queued for it, wondering what the fuss was about. As I got nearer the front, I was intrigued by the disclaimers regarding damage caused to bags, hair on anything else that's not quite tucked in.

Even when you're on the verge of being allowed in, and you realise what the work actually consists of, nothing prepares you for the feelings as you walk up the tapering steel trench into the middle of the waist-deep, mirror-black tank of sump oil. The County Hall office room is perfectly reflected off the utterly still surface of the oil. As you peer into it, you get a rush of vertigo sensations.

Other notable highlights are Ron Mueck and Duane Hanson's hyper-realistic human figures. Saatchi's brave decision to place no barriers between public and art leads to almost comic situations when you stumble across one of Hanson's figures sitting on a bench, or pushing a cleaning trolley.

Unfortunately, but predictably, photography is not allowed, so I am unable to provide any illustrations, but here are some links:
