Nokia 6600 PC Suite problem

I'm posting this in case anyone else is encountering the same problem...

I've upgraded to a Nokia 6600 and attempting to connect it using the PC Suite software that came with it. The IR connection is established, no problem. I go into the PC Suite software and it prompts me to name the phone, using "Nokia 6600" as an example. No matter what I enter I am told that it is not a valid name and it won't let me into the PC Suite.

All a tad frustrating. If I crack it, I'll post the solution. In the meantime, post a comment if you're encountering this problem too or know of a solution!

Update 20/11/03: The good news is that everything seems to work fine when using a Bluetooth connection (which is better anyway).

Update 21/11/03: I hear that this problem may be caused by installing PC suite on to a separate drive to the Windows system drive (which I did). Will check it out if I can be bothered.

Update 25/11/03: I use the MSI PC2PC Bluetooth dongle but found the drivers that came on the CD to be sporadically unstable. They have since updated them substantially. If you use this dongle, I highly recommend upgrading.

Update 21/12/03: Nokia has released a registry cleaner for PC Suite to help with installation issues. Strikes me as rather poor solution to a widespread problem. They would do better to rework their code and release an improved version of the system itself.

Hi

I have some addtional problems with PC suite for Nokia 6600... I was trying to connect to Nokia 6600 with PC suite for the first time. After installation on Win 2K pack 3, my mRoute connection keep on disconnecting, Not connected, connected & on & on it goes.. If I open the PC suite App, It will prompt me to Click OK if its the first time. After that, on the right bottom corner of the app. I still see its disconnected. Called up Nokia Care, change my Irda to 38,900K connection rate & Used Vishay 6000 for both Transceiver A & B... ALL STILL DOES WORK!!!

Should I just try bluetooth? Can It work or at least get connected?

I've found bluetooth to be much more stable and reliable. Having said that, it's still a bit flakey with the bluetooth software hanging every now and then, but that could just be my setup. You can get bluetooth dongles for around £20 now so I'd give it a go.

Hi Paul

Thanks for the advise.

I think the only way is to give bluetooth a try so I do not have to key in my backup contacts one by one.

Such a pain in the xxx..

Nokia should do something about it & made all thing more user friendly when you upgrade your phone...

Thanks again, pal!

I have the same problem with PC Suite.
Any ideas yet?

As per our email conversation, the trick of installing PC Suite in the same partition as your Windows system seems to solve the problem.

Hi, I have set my 6600 up with a BTooth dongle, but don't seem to be able to see any system folders once connected (as with my T610). How do you move files from PC to Phone and vice versa?

Posted by: Jay on December 3, 2003 02:01 PM

Nokia's PC Suite seems to deliberately hide the system folders. I assume this is an attempt to reduce piracy and hacks. The best way round it is to use a phone-based utility like FExplorer to move files between the system folders on the phone and the public folders that are visible from the PC. This works both ways.

Dear Paul:
Congrats to your website: excellent design!

I get the impression NOKIA builds by far the best mobile phones (I just replaced a new SonyEricsson P800 by 6600) but has a lousy PC software dpt. No wonder, it can't bring direct sales!

I face exactly the same problem with my urgent wish to smoothly move 250 full contacts from my old 6210 to 6600 by PC Suite. None can connect to PC Suite though 6210 has a cable and 6600 a working IR connection.

It is somewhat ridiculous knowing PC Suite is not new at all and should be long out of such development bugs.
I came to know that NOKIA is well aware of their shortcomings. Apparantly NOKIA staff must hear this from all friends outside. It has been discussed ... but nobody expects it to improve soon.

i too have the same problem somebody please help me. Currently using XP and connecting via a USB Blue tooth dongle. This is the first time i have posted to this site. I have the Billionton Blue tooth device USBBT02-B and the Nokia 660. I have been successful at connecting the two for transfer of files, but then to connect to the serial port connection it claims it is unable to do the same. It attempts for about 30 seconds then says that the device ended the connection. ??????????????? Occasionally even that goes through but the same problm as inI even tried to change the settings for the regedit version as stated but that was already on 1

I even had the same problemI go into the PC Suite software and it prompts me to name the phone, using "Nokia 6600" as an example. No matter what I enter I am told that it is not a valid name and it won't let me into the PC Suite.

I have IBM thinkpad with Windows XP and Nokia 6600. I have same problem as first poster Cat. Windows XP builtin File transfer seems to work (files appear always to inbox). But I'd need PCSuite to work. When I check the infrared checkbox in mRouter, it keeps connecting and disconnecting without luck actually keeping connected for more than 2 seconds. Using the phone as modem via infrared works though.

I also have USBBT02-N bluetooth dongle, but I lost the driver CD somewhere and the driver I downloaded from billionton complains I don't have license (!?) to use this dongle... I'm also quite sceptic about windows and bluetooth working well...

The com port the 6600 shows in modem list does not show in mRouter.. that's wierd. When I try to connect to that com port using terminal software I get some binary data out from the phone, so it might work if the mRouter would use that com port.

So, has anyone had the same problem and more importantly, is there any solution to this?

Trug,

I gave up on IR. As for license problem, when I upgraded the driver for my MSI dongle I had to get a Bluetooth license from Widcomm tied to my particular dongle. I think the Billionton dongle runs on the same Widcomm software - instructions on how to obtain a license are on the Billionton website (look up the Bluetooth drivers section).

Good luck.

Need help. Where can I download the latest version of Billionton USBBT02-B driver? Can it work with Nokia 3650? I tried it once but failed with the first version.
Thanks before.

It's really quite scary how many hits I get from people clearly facing Nokia 6600 problems. I think most of the answers or pointers to the known ones are contained in the posts above so I am going to close this post.

Hopefully Nokia will soon sort out the frankly embarrassing lack of a 6600 support section on their website. In the meantime, if you're having problems I suggest you visit one of the various unofficial Nokia forums. The more technical amongst you will enjoy www.nokiafree.org/forums

I (Trug) posted on your site about my irda problems, and now found a solution that works at least for me.

As I explained the irda connection was going on and off constantly and pc suite couldn't connect.
Then I thought I try install http://www.ircomm2k.de/ which would make virtual com port, which it did.

So, I installed ircomm2k and then Nokia pc suite
and now the ircomm2k popup came and said there is another program using the irda port (which I knew is the irftp.exe that automatically starts when irda device is connected) and suggested to try stopping the Infrared Monitor service which I then figured out is the service that start the irftp.exe. When I stopped the service he pc suite immediately connected using irda.

Hi,

I think I have managed to sort the nokia 6600 PC suite problem.

You need to disable the bluetooth network connection I.e. right click on 'my network places' then 'properties' and disable the bluetooth connection.

then, right click on the connection icon in the task bar and select change device, then refresh!

It has worked on every setup I have tried it with.

Hope this helps

I had the same problem with the IR connection. It kept disconnecting. I found that the problem was related to my Sigma USB Irda adaptor settings. I changed the adaptor settings and it works now. I went to the control panel/Wireless/Adaptor properties/Advanced menu and changed the value to be a Sigma Tel 4000 instead of the default Sigma Tel 4012. I don't know what the path is under other systems besides XP, but just get into your IRda adaptor properties and the Advanced menu.
